Inactive memory

I've noticed that when using more demanding programs such as photoshop and capture one that most of my "free" available RAM is being used up while the remainder (about 1gig) is left as inactive. This gig of RAM remains inactive even if there is little to no free RAM left for the programs running to use.

There are two 1gig sticks in the first DIMM riser and two 512 sticks in the bottom riser. All memory has been tested with memtest and said to be working correctly.

I am trying to determine if additional RAM would help these performance issues, if there was a problem with some of my RAM, or if this is just how OSX and the programs handle the distribution of memory.

Also I just began running a OSX software based RAID 1 on two of the drives (neither are boot drives). Anyone familiar with how the disk utility RAID effects performance while running in the background? Thank you!

Which version of Photoshop are you running? I believe older versions might be limited in the amount of RAM it can use. Could be wrong...

As to software RAID 1...it should affect performance. Basically, you are requiring the computer to copy file between volumes in the background. Don't know how much it will effect performance, however.
