force quitting with the Activity Monitor?

Nothing bad I've ever encountered.

Usually the processes have association icons or at least a logical name (i.e.: Twisted Melon's Mira's Processes don't have icons but are named logically, so I'll usually quit MiraUSBdriver since I don't have a USB Receiver hooked up to my MBP)

I wouldn't recommend just flipping processes off willy-nilly as some of them are important (for example I believe the one with the name Windows something controls all open finder windows and not MS Word Like I thought it did some odd number of years ago)

In any case nothing is ever permanent (at least in my experience) and a quick restart will fix everything right up (Kinda like ending the Explorer process in Windows, scary at first, but easily fixed)
