Review: Logitech AudioHub

I see that this review is less than a month old.

It should be noted that while the original price was $100, as listed in this review, it has been available at my local CompUSA for quite some time at just $20 bucks. For this price I found it to be a steal and picked one up a few weeks back.

Not only does the design match my MBP while fitting nicely behind it on my small desk, but I also gain three independently powered USB ports (technically I'm gaining two but whatever). Independently powered USB hubs are often $15-20 dollars on their own.

True, the bass is nothing amazing but it is better than most three piece sets I have used, while this one is much more compact and easier to move then those are. Plus, when you think about it, having a small sub at ear level on your desk is going to be better than a large one on the carpet under your feet, which is where most end up.

Also, not mentioned in the review, this device has a volume knob which uses the software volume in your laptop. This is one of the advantages of using USB over a standard AUX plug. How many people have you worked with that get all annoyed at having to adjust both their system volume and their powered speaker's volume to get their sound right? Just having the system volume works much better. (This was incorrectly marked as a CON when it should have been a PRO feature.)
I don't know about you but I still prefer a knob to dial as opposed to the digital up/down keys that many of the new speaker sets have. It should be noted that when the system is powered this dial is lighted in a yellow color, so that you can see it clearly even in the dark. You can also easily press the dial in, slightly, like a button, and it will mute/unmute your audio.

Other things worth noting in a public review of this device:
Firstly, the box comes packaged with a USB extension cable, in case the hardware-attached cord is not long enough for you. Again, this is a component that could easily cost $10 or more separately. Think of how often we all can use a USB extension cable! It seems like everything is USB these days.

Secondly, and also included, is an attachment for the sound-bar that is designed for webcam attachment. So that it'll still be in place and adjusted (and powered, if you leave it plugged into one of the sound-bar's usb ports) when you get back from being away and set up your laptop at your desk and plug the Logitech Bar in. How nifty is that? No more need to plug your eyeball cam back in and re-adjust it to fit and focus where it is supposed to.

Thirdly: the quality. I wouldn't mention this if it were any site other than one with apple or mac in it's name, but this is important. Logitech has always been great about having excellent Mac drivers and support for their hardware. Often having them functioning even better than they do on a Windows rig. In this case you just plug it in and OSX recognizes it as a USB sound device. And if you select it as your audio device and unplug it, your computer will remember that setting and use the device automatically the next time it detects it (when you plug it back in). And it adjusts it through your system volume, the same as built-in speaker would.

Overall, this is a rare device in my experience in that it has truly been thought through and designed to be ideal for a laptop user who is sometimes mobile but often at their desk. And in that regard, I think it fills that hole about as well as it is able. And again, in that regard, with that in mind, I would personally say in my years of experience with such devices and with end users using similar products, that this fills it's designed purpose with the result being worthy of 5 mice (five stars), maybe with it only lacking in that it would be better if it had three more usb ports on the other side.

Note to Macworld: please, if you are not going to do a true review of a device then just don't do a review at all. How can we rely on a review to be worth anything when the end-user experience, upon personal use, is a stark contrast to what your experts report finding?

I hope this is of help to anyone looking, and I would consider this an Excellent purchase if you need good speakers for common media use.
Thank you.
