My new iMac just died it seems.

I was on it for 1 hr when it downloaded a fairly large OS update and asked to reboot. Since then, it wont boot. Every time I boot -- it just hangs in grey screen permanently.

I tried recovering with the boot disk (using disk utilities, as I read somewhere) but that did not help too.

Has anyone faced similar issues before? FYI, it shipped with 10.6.2. This is a 27 inch iMac with the i5 processor.

Help, please!

I'm a graphic designer and am getting ready to update everything in my studio and would love to have some advice on what to get as I am a technical neophyte.

I will be updating to CS5 and will be purchasing a new mac.

I do mostly print design and use Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator most of the time but occasionally also use Flash and Dreamweaver. (I use After Effects and other video programs VERY rarely.)

I am hesitating over whether to buy a Mac Book Pro 17", an iMac or a MacPro.

My last 2 computers have been laptops but I feel like they were much more fragile and not as powerful as my towers. So I am leaning towards the MacPro or iMac. (Only considering Mac Book Pro because of portability to show clients work... which is lower on the list of priorities to a fast running system.) I am looking for something that will run all of my CS5 programs quickly and not lag, but at the same time don't want to pay for a machine that is more than what I really need.

Like I said, I am not technically inclined, so I would love to get advice on what type of computer, memory etc. would be good for what I'm doing!!!

Also, while I'm at it... does anyone have a recommendation for a monitor (for if I don't go with the iMac), a laser printer that prints 11x17", and a graphic tablet?

Thanks so much in advance for your input!

Which to choose?

I am looking at purchasing either a new imac 2.93 27" with 8GB 2TB or an older Mac Pro early 2008 8 core.
Want to keep cost in roughly the same range of $2700 or less. Actually wanted to save a little with buying an older Mac Pro
but how old is too old? Primary use will be the Adobe suite, mainly Photoshop with a lot of photo manipulation.
I am having a hard time getting comfortable spending the same amount on an older machine but know it will have
that extra HD expandability and max 32gb of ram.
I also would love a little larger screen, mine being a 7 yr old now Mitsubishi CRT 22 inch monitor which still works fine.
i also tend to keep my system for a long time. Currently 7 years.

New iMac had gmail as POP, based on transfer of data from laptop. AppleCare tech supervisor had me change it to IMAP and it imported 2.5 years worth.

iPhone 4 was sending and receiving gmail but does not receive now. Deleted the gmail account and set it up using the Other category. Still wouldn't work. Deleted gmail account and went back to gmail icon for new account which I think is POP. It now sends but does not receive.

Laptop is still using POP gmail and all is working well.

Both the laptop and the iMac are sending and receiving. The truly odd thing is that there have been 5 or more gmail messages that have been received on the laptop and iMac that do *not* appear at gmail.com. How can that be?

My goal was to have everything synched but now I just want the phone to have gmail again.

A number of my data files show up with icons that look like darkened screens with the legend “exec” in green in the upper left-hand corner. I cannot open these files by double clicking nor can I open them within the applications that the Finder indicates that they were created with, e.g., MS Word, Preview, etc. Using some of the other options that the system offers for opening files, the most I can do is display visible garbage.

After 3 years of loyal service, I decided to replace my aging iMac so I just purchased the new imac 27" quad i7 with a 256gb SSD and a 1tb drive. My previous iMac had a 750gb drive. I had a Time Machine backup and a Carbon Copy clone.

When I received the iMac, the SDD was already setup as the boot drive and the 1tb drive was completely empty(no system). As soon as I booted, I was asked by the Migration Assistant if I wanted to restore from a Time Machine backup. I had about 550gb on the old iMac plus a 100gb BootCamp partition and obviously, all this would not fit the SSD so choices had to be made. I chose all applications, users, networks and settings. After a few hours, the transfer was completed without a hitch. Then came the problem, I started Migration Assistant to transfer the rest to the 1tb drive but Migration Assistant won't allow you to choose a destination other than the boot drive so you can't transfer any data to the other internal drive using that.

I spoke to Apple and they said that no, Migration assistant won't do it and they doubt it will change any time soon. I won't even mention that as far as Boot Camp is concerned, you are also up the creek and have to start over. It's interesting that Apple now sells iMacs with multiple drives with no way to restore your original data properly.

Finally, I decided to install a complete system on the 1tb internal, and boot with that to use Migration assistant to transfer the rest and it did but I must have done something wrong because now, some files now have the wrong ownership. I have figured out that if I transfer the same problem files from my Carbon Copy clone, the ownership follows properly but it is a tedious process.

So, my question is "Oh Mac Guru, what would be the best and safest way to do this migration from a single drive iMac to a multiple drive iMac?"

Thanks in advance.

I have another issue with my new Mac. Ok, it's not new, it's used, but it's new to me. It's an iMac with Leopard and has 1 gig of RAM. Anyway, due to financial constraints I'm on dial-up, actually always have been. Financial constraints have been going on a long time... I am as well on my old iMac 9.1. My old iMac is so much faster connecting, disconnecting and going from web site to web site, page to page, etc... My new iMac is so slow I could make a full dinner by the time it finally loads the web site I went to, or a page I've clicked on. Anyone know why it's soooo slow? I just can't understand how a 60 gig hard drive with 1 gig of RAM can be so slow. I only have a 10 gig hard drive and 384 RAM on my old iMac and it runs circles around this one.

I've had to learn to be patient over the years with dial up, but man, the new computer is re testing my patience level to the max. I get so frustrated I give up and shut it down. I've been doing it for over a year now, so it sits like a paper weight next to my old iMac. My connection doesn't hold either, it keeps dropping and I have no idea why. I'm lucky if I can stay connected for 20 to 30 minutes at a stretch. It's fine on my old iMac, rarely ever drops me, and I can stay connected for hours if I want to. Such polar opposites it's unreal.

Any help on this would be very much appreciated as well!

Thanks,

So I just recently purchased a new iMac (yay!) I wanted to send in my old iMac for the recycling program apple has with powerON but I don't have any of my old disks to restore it. I was wondering if they would restore it for me at the apple genius bar? and if anyone knows how much they would charge... or if anyone knows which disks I would need to restore it myself? (I can't remember what OS was on the computer when I originally got it, that is the OS disk I would need to restore it, Correct?) It is a 2006 17" iMac G5 1.8GHz & there are two models it could be and I'm not sure which it is... ALS M9843LL/A or FP M9249LL/A ( I don't know the difference between FP and ALS )

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance.
