"Clear the decks
Many Mac users believe the Desktop is the perfect place to store files. After all, it puts the files you use most often front and center. The problem is that the Finder treats any folder or file on the Desktop as a window. That window designation is benign if you don’t have many items on the Desktop, but clutter it with files and folders and the Finder will slow significantly. If you’ve noticed that the Finder has become pokey and you have a lot of items on the Desktop, there’s your answer—too much clutter. It’s time to pick up your junk and put it in its proper place."

The above quote is from a recent Macworld article: Tips for a tidier Mac

I'd like to hear more about this. It would seem to make a huge difference in the way a Mac is used - lots of desktop icons = slow computer; a blank desktop = faster computer.

I called Apple and the support advisor said that they had never heard of the issue. Does anyone know of any references bearing on this?

See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1902288&start=330&tstart=0
Been an issue since early 2009 and over 30,000 views at Apple's support community website.
It's unresolved and now I add my monitor to the list. I am working away and then --- nothing. Then comes back on. Maybe a temperature issue, maybe graphics card, maybe connector.. who knows, but there's an opportunity for some investigative journalism here :-)
Thanks.

Hi Macworld!

I have been having difficulties lately getting my iPhone to communicate properly with my computer.

I need to set up a network between the two, so that I can use an application on my iPhone called TouchOSC to send data to my computer.

I need to establish a solid, working connection between these two, as I need these devices to work together for live performances.

I can't seem to get my iPhone to connect properly to the network though.

I've also tried to 'ping' my iPhone using Terminal, and it didn't respond.

I have a MacBook Pro, MAC OS X 10.5.8, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and a G3 iPhone. (If you need more details, please let me know)

If there's anyone out there who is able to give me some advice on this, I would sincerely appreciate.

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to hearing with you!

Cheers,

O.k. I'm new to Macworld, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section of the forum.
I have an I hope simple question.
There is an Excel sheet with loads of adresses. I want to export this to Pages so I can use the adress list for a mailing.
Of course, I can manually but keep in mind, it is a list of almost 2,000 adresses.
Is there a way to make my Apple do this by itself?
Hope you can help! I would appreciate it.
